Château de Meursault

Château de Meursault

The Château de Meursault dates from the 11th century, when Robert the 1st, Duke of Burgundy, gave the Moulin Foulot fiefdom to one of his squires. François de Raigecourt and his wife Béatrice de Beaufremont later acquired the property. It then passed into the hands of Pierre Blancheton, a lawyer at the Burgundy Parliament, who lived in Beaune. The estate stayed in his family up until the French Revolution, when it was confiscated and sold. It later was inherited by the Comte de Moucheron, who left the property to his eldest son, Etienne. At this time, it covered only a quarter of its present surface area. It was then purchased in 1973 by André Boisseaux, founder of the Patriarche/Kriter Group, and was faithfully restored. Today the Domaine du Château de Meursault is one of the biggest and most beautiful estates in Burgundy owning 60ha of vines and receiving over 30,000 visitors a year.

The cellars extending under the Château and outbuildings, part of which was constructed by the monks of Cîteaux during the 12th Century, can store almost 700,000 bottles and over 2,000 barrels of wines. The vineyards are in an ideal location with low hills to the west providing shelter from the wind. The vines grow down the slopes from a quarry on soils that are naturally diverse though all rich in limestone. There are three main soil types: hard Jura limestone, marly limestone and ancient limestone alluvial deposits. More than 30 years after rescuing the Château from oblivion, the Château has been returned to its former glory. Through careful management and by employing the best and most up-to-date techniques of viticulture and vinification, the wines of the Château de Meursault have now taken their place among the great wines of the Côte d'Or.
