The Domados winery was the dream of two Italian immigrants who arrived in Argentina at the beginning of the last century and settled in the heart of the Uco Valley in the south-west of the province of Mendoza. Don Giocondo Ficcardi and Humberto Spigatin began cultivating Malbec grapes in 1920 in La Consulta, one of the best soils in the world for these vines. Thanks to the hard work of their children and grandchildren the winemaking tradition is still very much alive in their family today.
The Domados name, meaning ‘tamed’ in Spanish, derives from a passion for horses and a parallel drawn between the knowledge, patience and meticulous care taken by the indigenous American-Indians to tame their horses and the attributes in every step of the winemaking process that are fundamental to obtaining great wine. It’s this concept of “taming wine” that inspired the packaging of the Domados range which reflects some of the different horse coats, such as: Rosillo, Tobiano and Lobuno.
