The wines from Western Australia are more en vogue than ever so our antipodean portfolio review wouldn’t have been complete without the addition of Domaines & Vineyards. If it’s a winery you’ve not come across before its certainly one to look out for, its acclaimed wines will soon be needing a new trophy cabinet if recent plaudits are any indicator. News just off the wire from Singapore is that Pemberley Chardonnay 2010 won best white wine at the Tower Club Wine Show, an accolade to sit proudly next to the three other trophies the wine’s former vintage won earlier this year. And Pemberley Pinot Noir 2010 has just been published as Pinot of the year in Ray Jordan’s 2012 Wine Guide, Western Australia’s preeminent wine guide.

Established in 2009, Domaines and Vineyards is a collaboration between Stewart Sampson, David Rado and winemaker Rob Bowen. The company is dedicated to hand-crafting unique wines from the premium Western Australian wine regions of Margaret River and Pemberton. Through his 39 vintage career, mostly in the western Australian wine industry, Rob Bowen has helped establish and make wines from many of the finest vineyards in the region.

Rob Bowen’s winemaking style is to always remain a custodian of nature, and to start the winemaking process in the vineyard. Rob hand crafts wines with minimal intervention, always seeking to enhance the inherent characteristics of each patch of grapes from our vineyards. At Domaines and Vineyards he creates wines under four eclectic labels:

Robert Bowen
The Robert Bowen label is the Domaines & Vineyards flagship range, produced in very small quantities from single patches of their vineyards. They are carefully selected for bottling on a vintage by vintage basis, with only outstanding wines from a vintage bottled each year. The wines chosen reflect the styles that showcase the very best of Pemberton and Margaret River

Pemberley
Named after David Rado’s vineyard property in Pemberton, ‘Pemberley Farms’, the Pemberley range is comprised of what we believe best showcases the cool climate region of Pemberton. The 2010 Pemberley range is the 3rd vintage of Pemberley and includes a Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir. Pemberley wines have received a number of gold medals and trophies already, with only a select number of wine shows entered.

Waterfall
The Waterfall range is selected and harvested from vineyards in the cool hills of Pemberton. The label is named after a little known alcove in the D’Entrecasteaux national park south of Pemberton. The range provides the wine connoisseur with access to great varietally expressive wine styles at affordable prices. The range includes a Sauvignon Blanc and an un-oaked Chardonnay.

Picaroon
The Picaroon range includes all the great expressive varietal characters from the most popular wine styles from Margaret River. The range includes a Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon, an un-oaked Chardonnay, a Shiraz and a Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines are vibrant, approachable and ready to enjoy. A Picaroon is a pirate, specifically a plunder of wrecks. This label is a play on Stewart’s history as a salvage and recovery diver in the former whaling port town of Albany on Western Australia’s South Coast.
